As well as the seven bodies just named, there are two others, Uranus and Neptune. These rule over the mental and spiritual things of earth. When one of these creative principles is separated from the others it leads to decay or death.

The first part of this combination of principles, or elements, is the natural physical body, of which we are composed. From the time of death this element gradually decays, and in due course returns to the earth "dust to dust".

The second part of the combination is the eternal body, the purpose of which is to record vitality and sensation. It is seated in a deep part of the brain, from which it communicates via the nervous system with all parts of the physical body.

The third part takes a leap of faith, and is where some people find difficulty. This is the intangible that we call "life". The non-physical force which permeates and energises every living thing on earth, and which is ended, as far as the individual is concerned, by death.

The fourth part is known as desire. It is seated also in the brain, and without it the physical body would die. It creates aspiration for love, wealth, fame, honour, power, knowledge, as well as envy, hate, malice, and deceit. In short, it is the psychic force in humans.

The fifth part is the mind, the intellect if you will, again seated in the brain, ruling everything else. The mind is king, controlling every impulse and every emotion. The body is only what the mind makes it.

I appreciate that for many people there is no real distinction between these "creative principles" bear in mind that this is just an explanation of some of the basic teachings of astrology, which go back thousands of years.

The sixth part is the soul, some may call it the conscience. We can feel it, recognise it, and act upon it, but it is for all intents and purposes indefinable. An individual may be clean living and honest, or a depraved liar. A conscience inclined to either would make its owner good or evil. In astrology it is a dual principle, leading to either peace and joy, or sorrow and misery.

The seventh, and highest, part is the spirit. this is a combination in itself, of universal light and creative power. This is all pervasive.

Thes are the seven principles that make up mankind, who tries to make himself master over the earth, and everything on and in it. Proper knowledge of himself and his power is required to enable him to make his life a continuous joyful and peaceful existence.

Astrology is said by those who practise it, to have the power to analyse and explain the cosmic forces of nature, and direct their operation to our own advantage.

Children born under this sign, that is between March 21st and April 19th, can be somewhat difficult to deal with, unless you have the understanding of their nature. That is reason, love, and kindness.

They do not easily take for granted an adults instructions, or requests without a reason and explanation for them. They can be stubborn and self-willed, and to discipline an Aries child the best method is a calm and reasoned talk, preferably at bedtime.

Corporal punishment is not the way with these children. It is wrong for several reasons. One is that, being very strong-willed, the amount of physical punishment required to bring them to your way of thinking if they believe you are wrong, would probably be unacceptable to even the most brutal parent. Another is that the mental conflict caused will likely traumatise them, and cause serious problems in adulthood.

As love and understanding is the only real influence that can control the Aries child, naturally, love should guide the actions of those in charge of them. Reason, love, and understanding will pay huge dividends.

Mostly Aries youngsters are excellent students, having quick minds, retentive memories, and ambition. They can be a bit highly strung and impatient, and they tend to use up a lot of their energy in trying to do too many things at once. Therefore sleep is very important.

There are twelve astrological "ages", each one lasting for a little over 2,000 years. However, due to various reasons, forces, factors etc. A particular "Age" can be longer or shorter than that, and not neccessarily the same each time round. The twelve "ages" run in reverse order to the usual signs of the zodiac.

That is to say that whilst the usual signs of the zodiac run in the order: Aries; Taurus; Gemini; Cancer; Leo; Virgo; Libra; Scorpio; Sagittarius; Capricorn; Aquarius; and Pisces. The reverse order applies to the "Ages", meaning that before the age of Aquarius we had the age of Pisces, and after the age of Aquarius will come the age of Capricorn.

Some astrologers believe that "Ages" affect mankind in general and also individuals to some degree or other. Whilst others do not believe that individuals are affected so much as civilizations, for example the great Roman Empire was at its most powerful in the "age" of Pisces.

Of course this is all open to interpretation, which makes this such a fascinating subject. Personally I don't see how great bodies of people i.e. civilizations, can be affected without the individuals that make up that civilization being affected. It is possible of course that each individual is affected in a similar way. So each interpretation could be correct.

Many astrologers take the view that the age of Aquarius is the age when humankind takes control of the Earth, and it's own destiny. This being our heritage. Of course one can see an immediate problem here, because if it is true, as astrology teaches us, that we are in fact influenced by the cosmos around us. Then we can surely never be completely in control of our own destiny. Either as mankind, or as individuals.

This makes us mere puppets then? Of course not, we all have choices. In fact one could say that we are in fact governed by the choices we make. Our choices determine the paths and directions we take throughout life, for better or worse. Again, we can come back to everyone being influenced by the cosmos, so are our "choices" in fact pre-determined? Complicated isn't it?

Sorry, I do like to make myself think about things. I hope I have made you think also. Still, back to the age of Aquarius. Some astrologers also believe that the many crisies the world has experienced over the past couple of hundred years or so, such as various "world" wars, civil unrest etc. is in fact due to the fact that we are in the "cusp" between the "ages".

Just as individual signs of the zodiac experience a short "cusp", or transition between the planets and stars moving in their individual sign, the "ages" also experience a time of transition. However this lasts approximately 250 years. So we can see that, depending of course on when you take the date of the start of the age of aquarius, we could in fact still be in that transition. Not yet fully in the age of aquarius, and still being influenced in part by the age of pisces.

During this time it is recognised that, naturally, some individuals will attain the enlightenment of the age of aquarius before others. These individuals will of course tend to become great influential people. Let us hope it will be the influence for good that will prevail. I personally believe that it will be so. Can there really be any choice?

These comparisons show that, centuries before modern astronomical research, the prehistoric originators of the zodiac and constellations had an excellent working knowledge of the position, relation, and movements of the planets and star systems. This has to make us realise that the teachings and practises of astrology, as they have come down to us through the uncounted ages, are in fact based upon the fundamental laws of the universe.

Astronomy and mathematics as sciences owe much to astrology. Which was practised long before we learned to chart the heavens and calculate the movements of the stars as a distinct and separate branch of science.

Is it so impossible to believe that these shepherds were astrologers, well able to read and interpret the message of the stars?

In a birth chart, the Sun sign symbolizes the Self, Consciousness and Spirit while the Moon shows the Supraconscious, memory, our automated reactions and the Mother archetype. The Moon displays its characteristics according to the sign and house it is in and according to its angles to other planets. While the Sun creates our identity as seen from outside and our ego, the Moon gives shape to our inner nature and our hidden aspects. It rules our subconscious, thus knowing the effects of the Moon in our birth chart can help us better understand ourselves.

The founder of Sahaja Yoga technique, Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi explains that our subtle system has three energy channels. These channels are the Left Channel (Ida Nadi) , the Right Channel (Pingala Nadi) and the Central Channel (Sushumna Nadi) that correspond to our left and right sympathetic nervous systems and our parasympathetic nervous system respectively. The last one runs through the center of our body. The left channel is home to our subconscious, past, instincts and desires and is symbolized by the Moon. The right channel (the Sun channel) is the channel of physical and mental activity, it is the channel of the future, it controls our ego and our outward expression.

The position of the Sun and the Moon in our horoscope and their correlations with other planets affect our mental, emotional and spiritual being. If the Moon rules our birth chart, we have a tendency to use more the left sympathetic nervous system, i.e. our left (feminine) energy channel. If we were born under the strong effect of the Sun, we are probably more inclined to use the qualities of our right sympathetic system, in other words our right (masculine) energy channel, thus demonstrating a more active, rational and stronger personality.

We might be bearing not only the positive but the negative influences of the Moon and Sun as well. For instance, our left energy channel could run out of energy if we over emphasize emotion and the past, which are governed by the Moon. Such a person normally lives in the past, is very emotional, overly sensitive and is prone to psychosomatic diseases. On the other hand, if we use the Sun channel too much, we can become too active, dry, angry, egoistical.

However, the aim of a birth chart and of life is to attain balance by harmonizing the effects of planets within us and with the cosmos. We can attain this balance if we know how to harmoniously use the subconscious and conscious, emotions and mind, masculine and feminine qualities, instinct and the mind which all exist in our left and right channels. This is achieved through the parasympathetic nervous system, which corresponds to the central channel in the yogic traditions. The hidden energy called in yoga as Kundalini, which lies dormant in every human being since birth, can rise through the central channel and connect us to the universal consciousness. This process is called self realization and the new state that is attained is termed Yoga, or union. Having being awakened, the Kundalini balances our energy channels (i.e., the right and left sympathetic nervous system) and brings our attention to the central channel, where a new state of consciousness called "thoughtless awareness" is established. As a result, one finds harmony within as well as with the Cosmos, and the effects of the planets in one's birth chart become neutralized. In one sense, our birth chart completes its purpose and loses its effect on us. The positive qualities and potential skills that were in our birth chart but which we didn't even know that existed within us manifest themselves more visibly while the negative traits and weaknesses are eliminated. This gives the individual the joy and satisfaction of knowing and realizing himself in life.

Astrologists believe that everything that happens to every body in the universe is in some way due to this influence between them. Consequently the destiny of nations, races, and individuals on this planet earth cannot escape the influence of these cosmic forces.

From long before the days of the mighty Egyptian civilisation, the stars and planets have been observed, and it was noted when certain aspects of the planets, sun, and stars coincided with certain conditions occuring on earth. So discovering the laws which produce the systematic, cyclical changes affecting mankind in general, and individuals in particular.

Using the knowledge gained over countless years the practise of astrology was formulated. And it's rules and teachings used to guide people in their daily lives, so that they would live in harmony with this great cosmic plan.

So in those very early days astrology, and it may well have been called something else then, was both science and religion, inextricably entwined. The science had to be there in order to measure accurately the movements of the planets and stars. The natural wonder and mystery of the heavenly bodies easily leading to them being held in reverence and awe, becoming objects of worship, and there is the religion.

In fact the most ancient symbol of God is a star, and the earliest form of religion was star worship. Proving the importance of stars, planets, and constellations from the very earliest times when man was just becoming sentient.

In the legends and traditions of all peoples are enshrined the story of a great cataclysmic event, wiping out all but a chosen few of all races on the planet at that time, bringing to an end the first period of human existence (Christianity calls it the flood) during which the constellations were regarded as the mansions of God. This was the time when the teachings of astrology were formulated, taught, and practised.

When astrology was first introduced amongst the eastern nations, the knowledge and science appealed strongly to the highly developed mysticism there, and spread rapidly through the adjacent nations via the Egyptian and Babylonian priests and Persian Magi.

From the writings of the Greek writer Philostratus we know that astrology was known and practised in Greece twelve hundred years before the birth of Christ.

So it is well proven that astrology has existed for uncountable centuries, the birth of Christ being prophesied by an Egyptian priest called Chechepetresonbu almost two thousand years before the event, ("The ideal ruler for whose advent he longs --- he brings cooling to the flames. It is said that he is the shepherd of all men. There is no evil in his heart... Where is he today? Behold, his might is not seen.") There is no reason to think that it will not endure for uncountable more centuries.

Sunday is ruled by the Sun; Monday by the Moon; Tuesday by Mars; Wednesday by Mercury; Thursday by Jupiter; Friday by Venus; and Saturday by Saturn.

Sunday in astrology represents the beginning of life, and Saturday to its end. The days in between are the gradual progression of life. The astrological reasoning behind this is that the Sun is the centre of the solar system, first in rank and size. Therefore governing the first day of the week.

In astrology all life goes round in cycles of seven. There is a period of seven times seven making up the first half century of an individual's existence. The first seven years, representing Sunday (beginning of life) is a period of weakness and growth, during which the child reaches the age of reason. The second cycle, from seven to fourteen years, is represented by Monday, and continues the period of intellectual growth and awareness.

The third (Tuesday) cycle covers the period from fourteen to twenty-one. We could term this the transition from youth to manhood. The Wednesday cycle, from the twenty first year to the twenty eighth is denoted as a period of struggle and stress, working towards the beginnings of achievement.

The fifth (Thursday) cycle, covering the twenty eighth to the thirty fifth year is a period of work, when an individual's responsibilities and burdens reach their upper limit. The period from the thirty fifth to the forty second year (the Friday, sixth cycle) is an wearing time of conflict, misfortune, and hardship.

The seventh (Saturday) cycle, from the forty second through to the forty ninth year is also a time of disappointments and reversals on the journey through life. When an individual reaches the age of forty nine his lifes work should be done (bear in mind that when ancient astrology formulated these cycles you were old at forty nine) and the remaining years should be devoted to more spiritual matters.

Now the seven times seven cycle is complete, another revolution begins, forty nine to fifty six, fifty six to sixty three, sixty three to seventy, seventy to seventy seven, seventy seven to eighty four, eighty four to ninety one, and ninety one to ninety eight. During this second revolution, although the individual cycles are still ruled by the planets as before it is a more spiritual time and whilst the influence is there it is not so emphatic.

So we can sum up the cycles of seven in astrology as follows: The first twenty one years of life is a period of growth, learning, and progress. The following fourteen years a time of work and advancement in the face of obstacles. The sixth cycle, beginning at thirth five is a time to be prudent and wary, taking no uneccessary risks. And the final cycle of this revolution should be pretty much a continuation of the sixth, a time for taking care and making circumspect decisions.

So far, despite extensive research by archeologists and others in the scientific world, no light has been shed on the problem of exactly where and when the Zodiac and it's symbols were designed. They certainly pre-date all the records of the oldest of civilisations, and have remained unchanged throughout the ages.

The Zodiac of the Akkadians, one of the most ancient peoples, who reached the height of their civilisation between 24BC and 22BC, is almost identical to the one we know today. These ancient people brought with them the rudiments of writing and mathematics when they invaded Assyria and Babylonia.

Babylonian tablets record the introduction of the Zodiac by the Akkadians before 3000BC. Those Akkadians came from the mountain regions to the north of Assyria, bringing with them the fading remnants of their once all-powerful civilisation.

It has been confirmed by modern astrologers that the grouping of the constellations, and the symbols of the Zodiac were the results of a profound knowledge of the stellar universe and the relationships between, and movements of, the heavenly bodies. It has even been suggested that this most ancient of peoples had the telescope thousands of years before Lippershey and Galileo.

Since then the Zodiac has inspired reverence and interest. The Hebrews knew and revered it ages before The Book of Law was discovered. This refers to the Torah, or five books of Moses. (Most certainly not to be confused with The Book Of Law written by Aleister Crowley in 1904).

The ancient Egyptians, who are usually regarded as the founders of the oldest known civilisation, did not claim that their knowledge of the stars and Zodiac were their own discovery, freely admitting that it came from peoples even older than themselves.

If we consider the fact that the origin of the Zodiacal constellations pre-dates the oldest known civilisations, and that it obviously requires a considerable intelligence and comprehension of natural law, space, and time, we must wonder who were these people who first discovered and revealed the truths of astrological law?

Another thing to consider is that if these people were so advanced in this respect, why did they not leave any other evidence of their, what must have been an extremely advanced civilisation?

There is one thing that we can be certain of. The Zodiac must have originated in the very cradle of the race, because we find the same symbols of the constellations amongst the writings of widely separated peoples at a time when travel was rarely undertaken, being difficult, if not impossible.

The fact is, we are no closer to discovering the true origin of the Zodiac than we ever were.

Gemini? The Curious One, born between May 21 and June 20.
