Writing well is a very common challenge for law students. Writing in law school is comprised mainly of brief writing and exam writing. The two are nothing alike. Beyond a law student's legal writing class, briefs are typically composed for the student's benefit; on the other hand, exams usually are meant to showcase the student's capability to retain and implement the course content. A poor exam can kill a student's grade, restrict his or her future prospects, and lead to unintended consequences. A poor brief can display incomprehension of the material and will lead to humiliation in class and poor performance on exams. To be successful in law school, each student should know just how to write both briefs and examinations.
