Many people suffer from the problem of deviated septum which is a medical condition in which the bone and cartilage dividing the nasal cavity get deviated and become off center, tilted or crooked. Such a situation may cause difficulties in breathing. This misalignment is not an uncommon issue and in fact, most people around the world have a slight or more deviation of the nasal septum. However, such misalignment doesn't cause any severe problem in general and can thus be ignored. However, if the case is extreme, then it may cause severe breathing problems.

Causes of Deviated Nasal Septum

This may sometimes be an issue right from birth. However, the general and more common causes of deviated septum are injuries, accidents or trauma in the nose. A severely deviated nasal septum not only causes serious breathing problems which may prove to be difficult to manage, but may also cause distortion of the face of a patient.

Common Symptoms of Deviated Septum

Deviated septum may cause nasal congestion which is a common symptom of this health condition and may prove to be difficult to manage without proper treatment. The patient may experience one side of their nasal septum being too much congested while the other may remain relatively free. This problem may also cause recurring sinus infections which would eventually result in difficulties in breathing. Some other less severe symptoms are given as follows:

-Nosebleed is a common symptom of deviated septum and may cause worry.

-Headache and facial pain are also common in patients suffering from this illness.

-Loud snoring and breathing during sleep is a very common symptom and it may also cause post nasal dripping.

One of the more dangerous symptoms of deviated septum is sleep apnea which is a medical condition during which the patient stops breathing during sleep.

Treatment for deviation septum

Initially, this may not appear as a serious problem for patients. However, it may gradually increase in its severity and the resultant sleep apnea can prove to be a lethal problem. This is the reason why it is necessary for patients to attain proper treatment as early as possible for relief. However, without proper diagnosis, it is not possible to begin treatment.

Once the problem has been detected, the patients may be required to take medication. However, if no medicine helps in improving the situation, then the patients may find themselves forced to accept going under the knife for nasal surgery. Surgery may include sepoplasty which is a relatively simpler or more minor surgical operation. In some cases, the patient may need to go through rhinoplasty along with sepoplasty to receive a proper cure. There are certain risks related with surgical treatment such as that the patient may suffer infection and bleeding in the nose, perforated septum in the nasal area, or loss of ability to smell things.
