Adding some trees or large shrubs to your garden will help you create a point of focus for your design. This article will help you add some healthy trees to your garden.

You can either purchase small trees ready to be transplanted or plant seeds. If you decide to plant a seed in your garden, it might take years before your tree is noticeable. It is true that planting a seed yourself is more meaningful, but do not hesitate to purchase a small tree from a nursery if you want to add a new specie to your garden right away. Choose the tree you want to plant or transplant carefully, and make sure it will adapt well to your area.

Your young tree needs a lot of attention. Young trees are often vulnerable to parasites or animals because their leaves are close to the ground. You should inspect the leaves of your young trees several times a week and look for holes or dark spots. The bark of your trees might have some marks left by small animals too. You can protect your small trees from parasites by wrapping them in wire mesh, installing a small fence around them or planting some aromatic herbs such as thyme, sage or marigold around them to keep parasites away.

Trim your trees regularly. Your trees will keep growing if you cut branches regularly. Trim smaller branches if they are too close to the ground, and cut lower larger branches to concentrate the growth in the higher branches. If you planted some fruit bearing trees, do not expect to get quality fruits until your trees reach a certain height. You can also choose to cut the higher branches and grow some small trees.

Trees expand their root system as they grow. Some trees have larger root systems than others, but trees typically need more space than other plants. Make sure your young trees have enough room to expand their root system, and do not hesitate to transfer them to another area of your garden if they need more room. If you want to plan other plants near your trees, choose plants with small root systems such as flowers or small shrubs.

Use fertilizer to help your trees grow. There are chemical products you can use, but you could also create your own compost pile if you want to use eco-friendly fertilizer. You can keep your food scraps and the waste from your garden, throw it on a pile and wait a few months. Bury the compost near the root system of your trees to make sure they get all the nutrients they need. Your trees will produce plenty of colorful leaves as well as additional layers of bark if there are enough nutrients and water in the ground.

These tips will help you grow some healthy trees and create a more interesting garden. Keep in mind that growing trees take years, but your hard work will be rewarded if you plan on staying in the same home for a long time.
