Carpets add beauty and color to every room of the house. They are a worthwhile investment in providing comfort and warmth, but they require proper care. When carpets are exposed to stains or spots, it is something that needs immediate attention. Otherwise, these can set in and become impossible to remove.

Fortunately, stains and spots can be removed when they are taken care of as soon as possible. You do not need to call professional carpet cleaners in right away. You can take care of stains by using simple household cleaners. It is important to understand a few basics about the various stains you will encounter so you can handle cleaning them as effectively as possible.

The Basic Rules Of Carpet Stains

Never rub the carpet when attempting to remove a spot or stain. This sets the stain and pushes it further into the pile of the carpet. The sooner you can work on removing a stain, the better chance you have of eliminating it completely.

Always begin removing a stain by blotting away any excess using a clean cloth or paper towel. Follow the general rule of testing any solutions you use on an area of the carpet that is not readily visible. This way, you can be sure the carpet dye is not affected by the solution you use to clean it. Next, you want to determine the type of stain in order to begin working to remove it properly.

Water Soluble Stains

Water soluble stains are caused by dirt from outdoors, mud, colas, wine and many foods. When you are dealing with a water soluble stain all you need is vinegar and water. Use a mixture of both and apply it directly to the area needing to be cleaned.

Stains caused by blood, coffee, wine or vomit require extra attention. Use one tables spoon of ammonia mixed with a cup of water and apply this to the stain using the cloth or paper towel. Do not use the ammonia mixture on wool carpeting, as it can be detrimental to the floor beneath the carpeting.

If your carpet is a solution-dyed carpet, you can use a mixture of one tablespoon chlorine bleach and five tablespoons of water to work on stains. You do not want to use bleach on any other type of carpet.

Non-Soluble Stains

Non-soluble stains include those caused by wax, oil or fats. These stains are easily treated by placing a paper towel over the carpet and gliding an iron on low setting over the paper towel. Remove a substance like nail polish by applying a cotton ball soaked in a little nail polish remover.

Understanding the basics of carpet stains helps you to tackle them before they set in and become a problem. You can keep your carpets looking beautiful for many years by taking good care of them. Remember to clean them regularly with your vacuum and keep your home stocked with the basic ingredients to remove the types of stains detailed here.
