Carcinoid tumor is a very rare type of tumor where the growth is very slow. It generally grows in those cells which remain on the wall lines of the lungs or digestive tract. At the earlier stages, there are hardly any seriously observable symptoms; however; as this tumor reaches its advanced stages, symptoms become clearer and are termed as Carcinoid Syndrome. There is very little information about the causes of this type of cancerous tumors that develop and advance in the body and various researches are going on to gain more knowledge.

Probable causes of Carcinoid Tumors:

As mentioned above, there is no infallible information about the actual causes of Carcinoid tumors. However, physicians, researchers and doctors often suggest that people belonging to given three categories may face larger risks:

1. People belonging to the African-American race.

2. People who are suffering from some kind of genetic syndrome related to Carcinoid tumor.

3. People who regularly face health problems that weaken the stomach and reduce its ability to create acid.

During its initial stages this disease doesn't cause any significant issues or visible symptoms. However, at its relatively advanced state when it acquires significant size, it starts releasing certain kinds of hormone- related substances in large amounts which adversely affect the body. This hormone- related substance may look like serotonin or other types.

Symptoms of Carcinoid Tumor or Carcinoid Syndrome:

Carcinoid tumors remain relatively benign during the initial stages but as they spread and acquire size, they start causing Carcinoid syndrome or other symptoms such as:

-Facial redness, flushing, and abrupt warmth running through the face and body which may appear like hot flashes caused during menopause.

-Problems like diarrhea.

-Abrupt fast heartbeats, wheezing, abrupt loss of blood pressure.

-Intestinal bleeding, abdominal pain etc.

In some cases, the symptoms of Carcinoid tumor become very severe. These include:

-Long lasting severe flushing and significant dips in blood pressure.

-Trouble in breathing, sense of confusion, and very fast heart beats.

-Skin color becoming a little bluish.

Treatment:

Although Carcinoid tumors may appear benign during their initial stages and have a slow growth rate, situations may arise when these tumors start causing serious and severe health issues. There are certain medical treatments which can be used to provide relief for patients. These treatments include surgery where doctors may succeed in completely removing the Carcinoid tumor from the patient's body. However, the success of surgical treatment depends on its position. Another significant treatment that can be applied by doctors to provide relief for their patients during the advanced stages of the disease is somatostatin analogues medicine.

These drugs can efficiently block the over- secretion of hormonal substances from Carcinoid tumor.
