Nowadays, almost all building and design structures are created using some type of computer-assisted design software - also known as CAD software. The most advanced of this software is AutoCAD. This is a type of design software that can be used to build different machine tools, consumer products and built environments in both 2D and 3D structure. It is highly beneficial to the majority of designers or landscapers in that one can communicate different design concepts to others via the internet.

As is mentioned different designers in industries can use AutoCAD as a means of communicating concepts and displays. The different industries in which this software can be utilized include the following:

• Architecture

• Building information modeling

• Civil engineering

• Electrician and electronics

• Engineering and construction

• Facilities management

• Fashion

• Geographical information systems

• Multimedia

• Sign-writing

• Surveying

• Town planning

It should be noted that the building information modeling sector (BIM) is a relatively new industry in which this AutoCAD software is being used.

AutoCAD was developed in 1982 as a design and modeling software to run as an MS-DOS program. In later years developers altered the operating systems to allow the software to function on both Windows and Macintosh systems making it one of the most popular computer-aided drafting options. In order to maintain their sophisticated level of operation in the increasingly complex world of design, AutoCAD introduced superior features to meet these requirements while still maintaining its logical simplicity.

Eleven years after the introduction of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT was developed - a less expensive and simpler version of its predecessor that does not include the future advanced 3D function. However, as simple as AutoCAD LT appears it is highly efficient and effective software.

As is mentioned AutoCAD can be utilized on both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The AutoCAD which can be used on Macintosh systems was presented in 2010 with the majority of its functioning similar to the Windows version. Unfortunately, it is still inferior to the Windows option displaying the same interface as pre-2009 Windows software today.

Below is a look at the primary functions of the AutoCAD design software:

• An ability to draw and modify geometric shapes in detail

• The ability to add precise dimensions and text

• The ability to view geometric shapes at various scales

• The ability to organize drawn data using different layers, lines and colors

In addition to the above mentioned features, the individual who is using the AutoCAD 2D software can also complete the following actions easily. He/she can:

• Create various layouts suitable for printing

• Create and import different symbols, blocks and objects

• Reference drawings over the internet

• Collaborate with numerous AutoCAD users over the internet

It should be noted that the latest AutoCAD system has provided one with the ability to collaborate 3D structures with users over the internet. Basically, there are three simple steps to follow when developing a drawing using AutoCAD 2D. First, draw the geometric shape. Next, add any text or dimensions. Finally, print or 'plot' the structure.
