Although the "paperless office" and other electronic wonders continue to elude us, there is in fact much less paper in our lives these days than in past. But that doesn't mean that preparing for your cruise adventure no longer requires that you gather your documents and important papers - it just means that there's a new wrinkle to the old problem of making certain you have everything you need for every eventuality. There is nothing quite so terrible as arriving at departure only to realize you have forgotten some important piece of documentation, so let's review what you absolutely must make certain to have ready.

Your luggage tags are absolutely essential. You should receive several as part of your cruise kit in the mail, and there are plenty of templates to use to print more off the Internet if need be. Place two tags on every piece of luggage in a clear plastic holder that is securely attached. Having two ensures that if one is torn off somehow, you have some insurance. Having clearly marked luggage tags is the only way to ensure your luggage arrives on time in your cabin - and isn't lost.

If you have any health issues, be sure to bring along documentation that certify you are healthy enough to travel or that you have special requirements, such as diet or climate issues. If necessary, bring copies of your vaccination certificates. Don't watch your cruise sail off without you because you cannot prove you've had all the necessary vaccinations.

Of course, you will also need your passport, your tickets or e-tickets (many people print out their e-tickets as a final piece of insurance). Bring along any receipts for pre-paid excursions or other extras, and it's a good idea to have a copy of your confirmation number with the cruise line - just in case. Visas, if necessary, of course, should be brought. Verify your passport is valid for 6 months after your return of your vacation or it will need to be renewed.

Make a note of all the little things: Combinations of locks, phone numbers you may need, PIN codes for anything.

Your currency or traveler's checks are absolutely vital, of course, but stash some emergency funds somewhere in your luggage. If you lose a wallet on a foreign shore it might be the only money you have to survive on for the rest of the trip!

Be organized: It's up to you to ensure you have all the necessary documents to make your cruise a success - and a reality.
