You migjt have tried writing an original book yourself and you might have spent a maddening few hours formatting it and then figuring out how to upload it to Amazon Kindle in hopes of making one-hundred dollars a month per book and having ten, no twenty, of them selling that much all the time. You might have even hoped and expected to be the next John Grisom popularity wise. (Maybe your book really is that good!) That is what the gurus promise us will happen, right? Everybody is doing it, right? Here is how it worked out this month for me.

My first Kindle eBook sold three copies this month. One of them was just a swap with another writer in a Facebook group where we put our books down to 99 cents and buy them from each other. We use the keyword others name to find their books with at Amazon and this drives it up towards the top of the search results page for the keyword. Once higher there it has a better chance to be seen and bought compared to the natural lower rank. We game the system. Two of the copies sold went for $1.99 and the third for 99 cents. It also sold one copy in November.

Why is 3 sales worth going on about? Well, the way it was explained to me by world class marketer, Blair Warren, is that nobody's book sells many copies. But having a book out there and getting people informed you have one published makes them think you must be some kind of big shot super duper expert in your field so if they want the kind of work done you do they tend to look you up to offer you the job. As such, when used intelligently, book writing is a marketing tool, not an occasion to be wined and dined by socialites.

It brings you offers of work, speaking engagements, clients of various kinds with money to hire you with. That is the way savvy marketers use their writing skills for their selves and for their clients. If you are a story teller you can get ghost writing assignments this way and writing students if you want them.

So don't cry in your beer if you did not get to be the next John Grisom. He is one guy out of six and a half billion world wide. Your work is still very valuable. So put on your marketers hat and get something going!

Got it?

Too funny!
