Just like their female counterparts, men can look fashionable as well. In fact, when men dress up, they appear especially distinguished and charming.

With the weather turning comfortably cool, autumn is the perfect season for many events to happen, and each event requires a certain dress code. Whether the events are casual or dressy, wearing the appropriate attire always makes a man look respectable. Therefore, choosing the right shirt for an autumn event becomes an essential task.

Wedding

Many couples choose to get married in autumn. With golden leaves and subtle sunset as a backdrop, who wouldn't want a wedding in such a romantic atmosphere?

If you plan to attend an autumn wedding, you need proper attire that's dressy and shows off this season's newest retro trend. This includes boot-cut trousers, long jackets, saddle shoes and skinny ties. The ideal look is cool, refined and dressy but without trying too hard. A retro shirt, then, is one with solid patterns and muted colours. Hues such as slate, brown or black all work well.

Camping

Another trend this fall is the woodsman look, which includes hunting boots, puffy vests, and wool jackets. All these elements keep you warm but also make you look cool. It's a tougher look than the retro but perfect for a hiking and camping trip. For shirts, flannel works the best. Try flannel shirts with thick material and large prints to show off your outdoorsy side.

The Races

Going to the races is one of autumn's favourite activities. If you plan to join friends for a day at the races betting on horses or dogs, then the preppy look is perfect for this occasion. Put on a pin-striped button up or a collard tee over a pair of straight khakis. This look gives you a sophisticated but also young, smart and professional look.

Theatre or Local Band

When the weather gets chilly, indoor activities become more popular. If you plan on going to the theatre or to see a local band, then try this season's smart casual look. The tailoring trend is always popular come autumn, and this year tailoring has become more casual. The catwalks have been filled with this loose tailored look which allows you to look smart without trying too hard.

Coffee Shop

If you are the type who likes spending a quiet night with a book at the local coffee shop, then head out with a preppy pinstripe or checked shirt, a sweater vest, bow tie and thick-rimmed glasses. This look is intellectual and witty, and makes the perfect ensemble for a night next to the fire place, sipping a frothy latte.

Dinner Parties

Dinner parties with friends are always popular events in autumn. Before everyone sees their family for the holidays, they usually get together with friends. For dinner parties, smart shirts with sweaters over trousers or dressy jeans work the best. If you're just with friends, you may not want to dress up in a full suit because it can look stuffy, but you also don't want to look too casual. Sweaters give you enough class but keep you from looking pretentious.

However, if you are attending a dinner party where a suit may be necessary, you could team your suit with a crisp white shirt and a coloured tie, bow-tie or cravat and a matching handkerchief for your top pocket.
