The application of the principles of finance to an individual's or family unit's monetary decisions is called personal finance. There are many aspects to personal finance, and they include but are not limited to checking and savings accounts, credit cards, consumer loans (car loans, mortgage), market investments, retirement plans, and insurance policies.

Get a copy of your credit report. You may not be in any real trouble, but keeping an eye on your credit report keeps you aware of your financial picture. You can also check the credit report for any mistakes so you can take care of them at your leisure instead of rushing to do so.

The majority of your unnecessary spending will usually come on a whim, as it should be your mission to limit this as much as possible. Before you go to the supermarket, make a list so that you just purchase the items that you are there for, reducing the amount of impulse purchases.

To maximize the money in your wallet, try not to shop on an empty stomach. When you are hungry, you are more prone to an impulse purchase, given your higher levels of stress and anxiety. Additionally, you will usually spend money on fast food, which will add up over time.

If you are renting, consider finally taking the plunge and buying a home. You will be building equity and your portfolio. You can also get certain tax credits from the government for buying a new home and stimulating the economy. You will not only be saving yourself money, but also helping your country as well!

Never co-sign on a loan for someone unless you are prepared to ungrudgingly pay for that loan yourself. Agreements like this don't end well sometimes, and should the other person default on the loan, you will be responsible for its entirety. It could damage a relationship with a friend or family member too.

If you have not begun contributing to your retirement, you need to start. If you have already started, look for ways to step it up a notch. Maximize your contributions, and if there is any way possible, completely max out your contributions. This will help you immensely when preparing for retirement.

Going out to eat is one of the costliest budget busting blunders many people make. At a cost of roughly eight to ten dollars per meal it is nearly four times more expensive than preparing a meal for yourself at home. As such one of the easiest ways to save money is to stop eating out.

To best manage your finances, prioritize your debt. Pay off your credit cards first. Credit cards have a higher interest than almost any other type of debt, which means they build up high balances faster. Paying them down reduces your debt now, frees up credit for emergencies, and means that there will be less of a balance to collect interest over time.

Thrift shopping and consignment shopping have become more popular in the current economy. Try buying your clothes, home decor, and kitchen items second hand. You can save a lot of money on the things you have to buy anyway that you can then put towards your savings or retirement accounts.

If you must get a credit card to manage your finances, try for a no-fee rewards card. While credit cards can easily cause more damage than do good, a rewards card will at least give you something back for the money you spend on it. Don't be tempted to overspend to earn those rewards, though.

We've covered the basics of personal finance. You know the possible pitfalls and some tips to get you through the rough spots. It's time to get serious and pinpoint the steps you need to take to achieve financial security in your own life. Do the necessary work now and reap the benefits you deserve. Use what you have learned to get on the path to financial success.
